This is an excellent movie. Nicholason is awesome and the acting is generally very good. The only problem I would have with it is the unrealistic way the mental patients are described. This is hardly the way it is to be insane. The movie is also a bit sentimental like for example scenes where we see severely sick people partying at Christmas. What joy could they possible get out of that? However, all this is excused because the plot is so good. The role of the big Indian really makes sense, and this is, of course, really the story of America. "They killed him. I'm not saying they killed him. They were working on him like they are working on you." This is the conversation between Nicholson and the Indian. It is very true. This is what "society" does to you as a person. There's always going to be some people who are "working on you" to get you down. But this movie is saying: Don't let the bastards get you down.
Everything about this movie is amazing, breathtaking. Nurse Ratched is perhaps one of the greatest and yet most underrated movie villains in cinema history; power-hungry, controlling, and tyrannical, she stops at nothing to prevent McMurphy from bringing joy, or to a degree, the real world into the lives of these detained misfits. Nicholson is the perfect rebel, one has to wonder whether he is truly crazy, or so sane he can no longer take the insanity of the medical staff and establishment. This movie is as close to perfect as i've ever seen. One of only three movies to win the big five academy awards, this movie is most certainly my favorite. Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher deliver, the sound and cinematography are remarkable and the supporting cast is flawless.
